How to Jailbreak your iPad Running iOS 3.2.2

Full disclosure: There is not yet a direct way to jailbreak an iPad running iOS 3.2.2. The most recent Apple firmware update makes short work of the “pdf exploit” used by JailbreakMe.com. If you haven’t yet updated to iOS 3.2.2, and you have a desire to jailbreak your device, do not download the update! The rest of you, take a deep breath. All hope is not lost. Follow the steps below to downgrade your iOS to 3.2.1 so that you can safely jailbreak your device. After that, I’ll show you how to use Comex’s simply fantastic JailbreakMe.com service to jailbreak your iPad, install Cydia, and unlock the full potential of your device.

STEP 1: DOWNGRADE TO iOS 3.2.1

In essence, you will need to download the .ipsw for the old 3.2.1 firmware, modify line in the “Hosts” file on your computer, then use iTunes to downgrade. The process isn’t too tricky.

First, do a Google search of “iPad1,1_3.2.1_7B405_Restore.ipsw” in order to find the correct file to download. It’s easy to find .ipsw files on BitTorrent sites like ThePirateBay.org, but if you’re not already familiar with .torrent files, you should be able to find the file hosted elsewhere, on sites like Mediafire or RapidShare. I suggest copying the text of the filename above, and pasting it into your browser’s search field to make sure that you do not accidentally download the wrong .ipsw– there are a lot of them out there.

After the .ipsw has downloaded, you must alter your “Hosts” file. To do this on a Mac, open Finder and click on “Go” on the menu bar at the top of the screen. In the drop-down menu, click on “Go to Folder.” After the text-input window opens, type the directory “/etc/” and hit enter. Find the file called “Hosts” and open it in TextEdit. At the very bottom of the Hosts file, after the last line of text, copy “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” without the quotation marks, and then save and close TextEdit.

Next, connect your iPad to your computer with the iPad’s USB cable, and fire up iTunes. Select “iPad” on the left-hand column in iTunes, but DO NOT click the “Update” or “Check for Update” button! Instead, hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click the “Restore” button in iTunes. At the prompt, choose the location of the .ipsw file you downloaded and click “Open.” Be patient: at this point iTunes will commence the often time-consuming process of restoring your iPad. If you have a slower computer, it can seem like ages. Just relax and get a glass of water. Also, ignore iTunes if it returns error messages 1011, 1013, or 1015. This is normal.

Finally, when iTunes is done with the firmware restore, reboot your iPad. You may choose to use a program like Recboot to exit recovery mode, but it is not absolutely necessary. A simple reboot will get your iPad where it needs to be for the final step in this process.

If you use a Windows PC, the steps you need to follow are very similar to the ones detailed above. For instructions, see our prior post on downgrading the firmware here.

STEP 2: JAILBREAK THE IPAD

Whether you use a Windows PC or a Mac, this part of the process is the same for everyone. Why? Because JailbreakMe.com actually allows you to jailbreak without hooking up your iDevice to a computer at all. All you need is your iPad and an internet connection.

From within Mobile Safari on your iPad, navigate to JailbreakMe.com. Next, slide the bar at the buttom from left to right– just as you would on your iPad’s lockscreen. Then wait patiently as JailbreakMe.com installs Cydia, the app that allows you to find and install apps and plugins that have not been approved by Apple.

When JailbreakMe.com is done, reboot your device. You are now the proud owner of a jailbroken (jailbreaked?) iPad! The first thing you should do is plug up the security loophole that allowed you to jailbreak in the first place. Apple’s 3.2.2 firmware update does this too, but at the cost of ruining the jailbreak. To fix the exploit, open Cydia by tapping its icon in your iPad springboard. After Cydia has loaded, tap the “Search” button in the lower right-hand corner. Search “PDF Exploit Warner,” and tap on it when it comes up. Tap “install” in the upper right corner, then “confirm” in the screen that follows, and you’re done.

Enjoy your iPad, and all the great possibilities that jailbreaking provides!
